A Real Brother Sharpens You

August 13, 2018

“As iron sharpens iron, So a man sharpens the countenance of his friend” Proverbs 27:17, NKJV.

My friend told me there were some things that he was learning from me, and in turn, there were some things that I was learning from him. He has given me some wisdom about the financial area of my life. I have shared with him some marital wisdom that he needed. He has encouraged me, and I’ve encouraged him. There are areas that are being fine-tuned, or sharpened, in our lives as a result of our friendship.

Iron sharpens iron. However, listen carefully. Iron is required to be struck at just the right angle in order to become sharp.

A lot of men spend time together, yet hide, evade, or turn our heads from discussing the things we really need to be open up and talk about. We have to ask the hard questions that really need to be asked like how’s our relationship with God, our marriage, being a father, or any sin you’re struggling with. We aren’t saying what we really need to hear. We aren’t confessing and praying with one another like we need to be. As a result, we are missing just the right angles of friendships to make each other sharper, better.

As a man, don’t hide from discussing the rough areas in your life, or you will remain dull. There is someone God has placed in your life that He wants to use to sharpen you, and God wants to use you to sharpen them. We aren’t meant to walk alone. You both can help one another become better husbands, better fathers, better men.

Prayer: Father, thank You for Your Word. Although You sharpen me, there are people in my life you want to use to sharpen me also. I can’t get sharper on my own. I humble myself Lord. Help me to talk about the things I’m going through and admit I can use some godly advice. Help me to not be ashamed and really talk openly so I can become a more effective man. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
