Be encouraged not to quench Him.

February 14, 2024

“Do not quench [subdue, or be unresponsive to the working and guidance of] the [Holy] Spirit” 1 Thessalonians 5:19, Amplified.

To quench here in the Greek means to extinguish or to put out. The Holy Spirit is like a fire that God kindles something in us, and He says don’t quench Him when He comes. He comes to burn away what’s not like Him. He comes to combat the wicked one and deliver. He comes with truth in the midst of adversity to empower us and keep us free. He moves so His fruit can overflow in our lives. I don’t get it right every time, but I’m learning more and more to recognize the Holy Spirit moving in my life and responding to it.

A move of the Holy Spirit not only can occur in a worship service. It happens in our daily lives, yet if we’re not careful, we can miss Him, quench Him, and not even realize we did it. You can be at work, and a song you weren’t even thinking of springs up in your heart that He wants you to sing. That’s Him. He’s trying to start a fire with a song you’re going to need today. When He moves on your heart to wake up. When He begins a spark of revelation of God’s word or about your life while you’re out and about, that’s Him. Even a word to speak to someone on your heart, that’s Him. It’s starting small, but there’s a fire He’s starting because of God’s great desire to bless you and them. The more we flow with the Holy Spirit, the more He’ll fill our cup with joy and peace, the more effortlessly we’ll get to where God is taking us, the more supernatural change we’ll see, the more great moves of God we’ll see. They may never make the news, but it will make God’s heart.

If you don’t have the Holy Spirit, ask Him to come into your life today. If you do, be encouraged not to quench Him. Watch Him do something amazing in your life.

Prayer: Father, thank you for your great desire to bless me. Give me the Holy Spirit. I ask for a deeper relationship with you, Holy Spirit. Forgive me if I’ve quenched you. I see you when you move at church, but help me to recognize more when you are moving in my personal life and teach me how to be responsive to you. I praise you for doing great things in and through my life. In Jesus’ Name, Amen!
