“Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man” Ecclesiastes 12:13, NKJV.
“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom…” Psalm 111:10, NKJV.
With the exception of Jesus, the wisest man to walk the earth was Solomon. Of everything he knew, this is what he said about life itself: “Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man. For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.” Out of all this wise man could say, who had all the riches ever that you could want, the most important thing he would tell you was to fear God and keep his commandments.
Selah–pause and think on that for a moment.
Solomon had been there and seen it all. He had done it all. Yet, this was his conclusion about life and the whole duty of man. If you center your life around anything, center it around this–reverence and honor God, and keeping His commandments. We have a glimpse of the God that he’s talking about because He is the One that sits in a position to judge (and will judge) everything, good or evil that we do.
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of a man’s wisdom. Wisdom begins there because it establishes who God is, and what a man should live for above everything else. Everything else begins to have a lesser meaning and what’s important day- by-day rises above material things and great gain.
This reverence is actually the key to success. The Father speaks all the time, but because you reverence Him, you’re listening and you hear Him clearer. It will cause you to walk closely with Him and receive a deeper counsel from Him. Because you fear Him, He will show you His will for you. He’ll show you more about Jesus. He’ll show you more about life’s purpose and He’ll make your way prosperous. It will cause you to esteem what He says is right and wrong, keeping His commandments.
Prayer: Father, You are the One that gives life. You are the One with all power and wisdom. Everything I see You made and I give You the reverence due Your name. Help me humble myself and do my duty as a man, to fear You like I should and keep Your commandments. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
